Trong một nồi có dung tích khoảng 3 lít, cho đậu đỏ vào với 8 chén nước, đun sôi ở nhiệt độ cao. Khi nước sôi, cứ để như vậy trong 1 phút rồi giảm nhiệt, đun liu riu và đậy vung lại. Cứ đun như vậy trong 90 phút hoặc cho đến khi đậu đỏ thật mềm.
Trong nồi khác, đun sôi 3 chén nước. Khi nước sôi, thả bột báng vào và giảm nhiệt. Khi bột báng trở nên trong và mờ, mềm, phần giữa hạt bột báng không còn màu trắng nữa. Thêm nước nếu nước bị cạn. Sau đó, tắt bếp, vớt bột báng ra, thả vào nước lạnh để không bị dính vào nhau. Vớt bột báng ra chén để chuẩn bị thưởng thức.
Khi đậu đỏ mềm, thêm 300g đường vào khuấy đều cho đường tan hoàn toàn rồi tắt bếp.
Nếu thích có thể xay riêng phần hạt đậu đỏ hoặc để nguyên. Khi ăn, múc chè đậu đỏ ra chén, rồi thả các viên bột báng vào.
